IOWA — Game 1 between No. 12 Iowa and No. 21 DeRidder was a fast-paced pitchers’ duel, but it was the game’s lone error that decided the winner.

Iowa (17-11) scored the only run in the sixth inning to open the nonselect Division II bi-district series.

Game 2 is Friday at 4 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will start at noon on Saturday.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Cole Corbello led off by getting hit by a pitch. Tyler Dartez moved courtesy runner Cole Bourne into scoring position. Then Lucas Alexander ground out to third baseman Hunter Hagood. Bourne held up midway between second and third to watch the play develop then took off. The Dragons (12-21) tried to catch him at third, but the throw sailed into left field and Bourne took off to score the go-ahead run.

The game barely hit the hour-and-a-half mark as Corbello and DeRidder’s Hunter Roberts battled on the mound, allowing a total of eight hits. Corbello struck out five and walked one as he pitched a complete game. Roberts had three strikeouts and a walk in six innings.

DeRidder had a chance to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the seventh inning, Mason Kaiser hit a leadoff single, stole second base and reached third base on a ground out by Logan Poteet, but Iowa left fielder Westin Leonard caught a fly ball to end the game.

DeRidder put a runner on base in six of seven innings and left seven runners stranded on base.
