Storms force delay of state golf tournaments

Strong thunderstorms moved through the state Monday morning creating major changes to the high school state golf championships.

All rounds were washed out, forcing the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to reschedule the two-round tournaments for today and Wednesday. Two boys divisions will have to play all 36 holes today, including defending Division II state champion St. Louis Catholic. Head coach Pat Neck said the Saints are used to playing multiple rounds in a single day.

“Our kids all play tournaments year-round, so they are used to playing a lot of golf,” Neck said. “On days that we don’t have school or anything like that, they play 36 (holes) on their own a lot of times.

“The one difference will be walking as opposed to riding like they do when they play at home. They are young and in good shape. They should be able to handle it.”

With rain in the forecast for the next few days, the tournaments could be shortened to a single round. In 2012, the Barbe boys shared a state championship with Zachary after the Division I tournament at Copper Mills Golf Club in Zachary was shortened to 18 holes due to inclement weather.

The Saints are looking to win their third title in four seasons.

St. Louis edged St. Thomas More by three strokes in the regional tournament last week, led by individual medalist Kye Hanks’ 69 at Links on the Bayou in Alexandria.

“We set a school record that day,” Neck said. “It was the first time we ever had four guys shoot under par in the same round.

“They are playing well at the right time, which we did last year as well. Hopefully that will continue. This group has been together for a while. Hopefully they can continue to play well in the postseason like we have the last few years.”

At the Division I girls tournament in Youngsville at Les Vieux Chenes today and Wednesday, Mattie Purgahn, Cassidy Scroggins and Maggie Dressler will look to lead Barbe to its fourth consecutive state championship.
