Bucs beat Tors on walk-off hit

The Barbe Bucs waited patiently for the right opportunity on Friday in its District 3-5A game against archrival Sulphur. That chance came at the last possible moment as they won 2-1 in walk-off style to clinch at least a share of its 28th district championship.

With two outs, Jordin Griffin singled to the left side. Sophomore Ja’Darryian Washington came through with another two-strike hits. His was a ground up the middle and into center field, allowing Washington to score the game-winner from second base.

“We made it happen at the end,” Barbe head coach Gleen Cecchini said. “Those two big two-strike hits with Jordan Griffin and then we pinch hit and Ja’Derryian gets the game-winning hit.

“That was clutch. It was a team effort. It was a great game between two really good teams. I am proud of our guys. We never give in, and we never gave up.”

Barbe (28-5, 14-1) can win the district title outright with a win at home today against Acadian (1 p.m.). Sulphur (22-10, 12-3) will look to break a three-game slide today when it travels to Moss Bluff to take on Sam Houston (26-4, 13-2) at 1 p.m.

Sulphur junior right-hander Slade Shove-Knox kept the Bucs in check most of the game, pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts and one walk. He allowed two runs but both were unearned as the Tors committed five errors.

“Their pitcher was unreal,” Cecchini said. “He has the best name in the state, and he was incredible.

“I think he is the best guy we faced this year, and we have faced some good pitchers — best right-hander for sure. IMG’s lefty is unreal. He did a great job pounding the zone.”

Barbe freshman pitcher Lawton Littleton pitched three scoreless innings before the Tors scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Jackson Beddoe scored on Carson Cauvin’s sacrifice fly.

Littleton allowed one earned run on three hits in six innings. Owen Galt pitched one inning of relief and earned the win.

Barbe’s Dane Dixon scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score at 1-1.
