Three times, Barbe has faced Sulphur this year railed. And three times, they have found a way to rally and win.

The No. 1 Bucs made their latest comeback Thursday night, beating the No. 17 Tors 3-2 in Game 1 of a best-of-three nonselect Division I regional playoff series.

“I am proud of our guys,” Barbe head coach Glenn Cecchini said. “They are battle-tested.

“You have to love baseball playing in the program because we put a lot of pressure on them in practice and the game. We were down and there was no panic. We are going to compete and we are not going to back down. It is just part of the way our culture is. It is going to be a battle again (today).”

Game 2 is today at 6 p.m. at Barbe High School.

Down 2-1, Barbe got tied the game on a bases loaded walk with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Myles Ledoux hit a single to left field to score J.D. Alexander for the go-ahead run.

The Tors took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Jackson Beddoe’s two-run blast to left field.

Barbe used its aggressive base running style to cut the Tors’ lead to one in the bottom of the second. Barbe stole six bases including a double steal in the second that scored Gillen McGee, who finished with three steals.

“I thought we were real aggressive,” Cecchini said. “Our first base coach did a great job.

“We are going to play to win. Sometimes aggressive can get you, but it has been a winning style for us.”

After giving up the home run and getting drilled by a pitch to open the bottom of the second inning, senior pitcher Diego Corrales shut down the Tors the rest of the way. He pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and one walk.

“I was worried,” Cecchini said. “He got hit hard (by a pitch in the second inning), but he is a competitor.

“He will always keep you in the game. In his career, he has one loss in four years. He has been pitching since he was a freshman. He is pretty good, and he has pitched a lot of tough games.”

The Tors got a pair of runners on with no out in the top of the seventh inning on Brody Harlow’s single and a walk. But catcher Presley Courville threw out courtesy runner Kayden Kochell at second base, and Corrales got to fly balls to end the game.

“That is what he (Courville) does,” Cecchini said. “He is so good at what he does. I am so proud of him. He is going to Texas A&M for a reason. I haven’t seen a better catcher in the nation.”

Sulphur pitcher Slade Shove-Knox (5-3) took his third loss of the season. He struck out five and walked four in six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits.
