A project is in the works that will bring sewer upgrades to the north side of Interstate 10 in Welsh.

Mayor Karl Arceneaux said the project will provide a sewer lift station to serve a new truck stop currently under construction, as well as any future economic development in the area.

“We are looking to the future, not just the truck stop,” Arceneaux said.

The low bid of $249,718 was recently awarded to JWD Directional of Welsh for the Frontage Road lift station project. The bid was one of three bids received on March 1.

The lift station will be installed on Kennedy Street near the Welsh Airport.

Work is expected to begin soon and will be completed in less than a month, according to Arceneaux.

The town has also approved an agreement with KPT for the sewer lift station reimbursement.

The Welsh Economic Development District 1 was recently formed which will allow the town to levy an additional two cents sales tax on inside sales made at the truck stop and convenience store. The sales tax will not apply to fuel sales or affect any other businesses in Welsh.

Money generated by the district will reimburse the town for the sewer project and other Frontage Road improvement projects.

Collection of the sales tax will begin once the business is open.

The truck stop is being built on a six acre site on the north side of Interstate 10, just north of the Henderson Implement building.

It will include a fuel station and convenience store. It will also have parking for 18-wheelers, four diesel pumps and 10 gasoline pumps.
