Dermot Jeremiah Wong

Dermot Jeremiah Wong, 77, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024 in his residence.

He was a native of Kingston, Jamaica and had been a resident of the Hackberry/Sulphur for the last 46 years. Dermot was a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, The Knights of Columbus Council 8978, the Southwest Louisiana Fishing Club, serving as the past Secretary and President, and had served as a volunteer fire fighter with the Hackberry Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed salt water fishing, wood working, cooking for those he loved, maintaining the best yard on the block, and helping build homes for Habitat For Humanity.   

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Brunnell Joan “Joanie” Wong of Sulphur; his children, Leslea Hoffpauir and husband, Richard of Bryan, Texas, and Shawnee Gastal and husband, Nicholas of Conroe, Texas; his siblings, Jacqueline “Jackie” Chin of Miami, Fla., Marcia Wong of Silver Springs, Md., and Maurice Wong of Frederick, Md.; two grandchildren, Abigail Hoffpauir and Maxwell Hoffpauir; and his beloved dog, “Foo”.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Daphne Wong.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Beverung will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines South Cemetery in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be held in the funeral home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday with a rosary service at 6 p.m. and will resume at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that charitable donations be made to Catholic Charities in Lake Charles or MD Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston. As we celebrate Dermot’s life and his place in Heaven, free from suffering, please feel free to wear bright colors instead of the traditional black.
