A 47-year-old Lake Charles driver has died from injuries sustained Saturday night in a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Opelousas Street and Mitchell Drive.

Louisiana State Police Trooper Sgt. Derek Senegal said the crash claimed the life of Tony Rebecca Hoyt.

Senegal said a 2000 Jeep SUV, driven by Hoyt, was traveling west on Opelousas Street when for unknown reasons, Hoyt lost control of the vehicle and traveled off the right edge of the roadway. After leaving the roadway, the Jeep struck a mailbox and then struck a culvert.

“Hoyt, who was not properly restrained, sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to an area hospital for treatment,” Senegal said. “A toxicology sample was obtained and will be submitted for analysis.”

Shortly after 10:00 p.m., Troop D was notified Hoyt had succumbed to her injuries, Senegal said.

Troop D has investigated three fatal crashes resulting in three deaths in 2024.
