An Alabama man who was shot by a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy last week after driving off with him in his car has died.

Louisiana State Police Trooper Derek Senegal said 37-year-old Quinton C. Baker of Gadsden, Ala., sustained life-threatening injuries during the shooting on Thursday and was airlifted to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Senegal said the deputy had pulled over Baker’s 2023 Cheverolet Tahoe for a traffic violation on Interstate 10 near Iowa, La., and was searching the car for illegal narcotics before the shooting.

“Baker was standing outside of the Tahoe while the deputy searched the second row area of the vehicle,” Senegal said. “During the search, Baker entered the Tahoe and began driving east on I-10 with the deputy inside of the vehicle. The deputy and Baker became involved in a physical altercation, at some point the deputy discharged his firearm striking Baker.”

Senegal said the Tahoe veered to the left and struck the center concrete barrier wall.

“After the initial impact with the concrete barrier, the Tahoe traveled across all three eastbound lanes of travel, through a ditch, and struck several trees before coming to a stop,” he said.

The deputy was transported to a Lake Charles area hospital for treatment of neck and back injuries, as well as abrasions and minor lacerations.

Senegal said two kilos of suspected cocaine was recovered during the investigation.
