Washington-Marion routs Istrouma to open playoffs

Washington-Marion opened the 2024 Louisiana High School Athletic Association girls basketball playoffs with a scoring flourish Thursday night and won its first playoff game since 2019.

The 15th-ranked Charging Indians beat No. 18 Istrouma 63-19 in the first round of the select Division II playoffs.

Washington-Marion (13-15) will travel to No. 2 Vandebilt Catholic in the regional round.

W-M raced out to a 13-0 lead to open the game. Lashayla Victorian stole the ball on Istrouma’s first possession and scored the first points of the game to start the rout.

Victorian scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter. Ty’la Broussard-Antoine added 13 points, and Jada Thomas and Kenadi Lilly scored 10 each.

W-M forced 12 turnovers in the first quarter and allowed Istrouma (16-13) just three shot attempts in the first four minutes. Istrouma got on the board with 4:30 left in the first quarter on a bucket in the lane by Kay’Lee Shepherd.

W-M used a 26-0 run that started with 2:45 in the second quarter to take a 55-16 lead into the fourth quarter.

Eryn Brown led Istrouma with eight points.
