Nancy Ellen Spell

Nancy Ellen Spell, 79, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024 in a local hospital.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Sulphur. Nancy was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss and was also a member of the Catholic Daughters. She worked as a bus driver with the Calcasieu Parish School Board for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and her beloved dog, Bandit.

Survivors include her children, Brian Spell of Carlyss, Brent (Jennifer) Spell of Orange, Texas, and Marla (Richy) Dubois; her siblings, Norma Louise Breaux of Carencro, Cathy (Frank) Hughes of Hackberry, and Douglas “D.D.” (Stephenie) Fontenot of Carlyss; sister-in-law, Sue Spell of Sulphur; her grandchildren, Alex (Rayne) Spell, Austin (Jaden) Spell, Emily (Zach) Sanders, Evan (Taylor) Meek, and Erin Meek; great-grandchildren, Lauralye, Eli, A.J. and one on the way, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 60 years, Huey Leon Spell; her parents, Pierre “Pete” and Thelma Fontenot; her father and mother-in-law, Evans and Almeida Spell; her brother, James “Jimmy” (Patricia) Fontenot; her sisters-in-law, Joyce (Gerald) McInnis, Betty (Nathan) Koonce, and Evelyn (George) Schultz, and brothers-in-law, Curtis Spell and Harold Breaux.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, in St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carlyss. The Rev. Raymond Cadran, M.S. will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday with a rosary service at 6 p.m. and will resume at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
