Byron Jessie Young, age 83, of Lake Charles, La. passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023.

Jessie was born to Henry and Mattie Young in Lafayette, La. on February 28, 1940. He was raised in Hathaway where he attended school and worked. As a young man he moved to Lake Charles where he settled. He was known as a jack of all trades and there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. He never had any children of his own but had numerous nieces and nephews who stepped in and were a big part of his life.

Jessie was always outdoors, tinkering with something, out in his shop. His family fondly remembers how he could take things (normally junk!) apart and completely remake a new item from those parts. He loved John Deere Tractors and like any true Cajun, liked to eat. He loved French music.

He was a very talented skater and could out skate those younger than him. Jessie was known as a captivating story-teller. He always had a story that involved other family members that he could recount in great detail. He was a proud and dedicated employee of BT1, at the Port of Lake Charles, where he retired.

He is welcomed into Heaven by his parents; brothers, Ernest “ EJ” Young, Duplice “Joe” Young; sisters, Joyce Istre, Shirley Stafford, and Helen Johnson; nephews, Henry Young and Ronnie “Burger” Young Jr.

Those left behind to continue on his legacy of story-telling are his brother, Ronnie Pierre Young (Mary) and sister, Mary Jane Skinner; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to extended family and caregivers Kay, Brenda and Danny Allen. They also would like to thank Dr. Bri West and all of the staff at Westwood Manor.

Visitation will be held at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles, La., on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 beginning at 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
