BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Hayden Travinski and Cade Beloso hit back-to-back homers for the second day in a row to lead the Tigers to a 13-7 win over Oregon State, clinching the Baton Rouge Regional championship in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers (46-15), the No. 5 national seed, will host Kentucky, the winner of the Lexington Regional, in a best-of-three super regional series later this week, with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. It will be LSU’s 16th super regional.

LSU followed the same recipe as in Sunday’s 6-5 win over the Beavers (41-20), using a barrage of extra-base hits to wear down the Oregon State pitching staff. The Beavers used eight pitchers in Monday’s game. LSU had six extra-base hits, including four home runs, as part of a 19-hit effort.

In two wins over the Beavers, LSU hit nine home runs.

Dylan Crews and Travinski had three hits each for LSU. Eight of the nine Tigers in the starting batting order had multiple hits.

Tré Morgan, Josh Pearson, Brayden Jobert, Beloso and Gavin Dugas had two hits apiece for the Tigers.

LSU used four pitchers with reliever Griffin Herring (4-2) throwing three innings for the victory. Lake Charles’ Gavin Guidry finished the game for a second consecutive day, getting the final two outs.

The Tigers never trailed and took the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Jobert was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run. Jordan Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to score another and Pearson hit a two-run triple.

Travinski and Beloso hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning and Crews added his 17th of the season in the sixth for a 7-2 lead. Crews was 8-for-13 with two home runs, four RBIs and five runs scored in the regional. Crews scored three runs scored in the final game.

Tommy White reached 93 RBIs for the season with a two-run single to highlight a five-run seventh inning for a 10-4 lead.

The first hit for Oregon State (41-20) came in the fourth inning on Gavin Turley’s home run to pull within 4-1 and Brady Kasper added a home run in the sixth. Turley also had an inside-the-park homer in the ninth to extend Oregon State’s single-season HR record to 89. Mason Guerra had a pair of hits.

The Beavers used eight pitchers with starter Rhett Larson (3-3) taking the loss.

LSU has won 23 of the 27 regionals played in Baton Rouge. The wins over the Beavers gave the Tigers a measure of revenge, as Oregon State beat LSU twice at the Corvallis (Ore.) Regional in 2018, when the Beavers went on to win the national championship.

On the move

Georgia hired LSU pitching coach Wes Johnson as its new coach on Monday.

Johnson replaces Scott Stricklin, who was fired on May 26 following a 9-0 loss to South Carolina in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. Georgia finished 29-27, including an 11-19 SEC mark.

Johnson was the Minnesota Twins’ pitching coach before making the unusual move of leaving the major leagues for the job at LSU on June 22, 2022. At the time, Johnson said the career change was “very, very, very tough. This the toughest thing I’ve ever done.”

Johnson, 51, will remain with LSU through its postseason.

Johnson, a native of Sherwood, Arkansas, previously worked in the SEC as the pitching coach at Arkansas and Mississippi State.

Stricklin completed his Georgia tenure with a record of 299-236-1 overall and 121-146-1 in the conference.
