McNeese State lost a pair of athletes to the NCAA transfer portal on Monday.

Former Cowgirls softball player Jil Poullard will remain a Cowgirl, transferring to Oklahoma State, while Johnathan Massie became the second men’s basketball player to enter the portal.

Poullard left the Cowgirls on Feb. 27, citing “inappropriate, unethical and unacceptable” incidents in the program.” The junior from Sam Houston High School in Moss Bluff was leading the Cowgirls in hitting with a .333 average with two home runs and seven RBIs in nine games at the time of departure.

She joins an OSU squad that is 29-2 and 3-0 in the Big 12 after a weekend sweep of Baylor. OSU played in the Women’s College World Series last year.

Meanwhile, Massie made his announcement on social media.

Massie, a sophomore guard, joins Christian Shumate as Cowboys who have entered the portal since the coaching change to Will Wade from John Aiken.

After an 11-23 season McNeese fired Aiken and hired Wade, a former LSU head coach.

Massie was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in 2022 when he started 25 of 31 games he played, averaging 5.5 points a game.

Last season Massie almost doubled that with a 10.5 point per game average. He started 31 of 34 games, grabbing 4.6 rebounds and dishing out 2.7 assists an outing.

Neither Massie nor Shumate entering the portal is all that surprising considering the coaching change.

Wade has received commitments from three players in the portal and a junior college scorer out of California.

He said he’s expecting to add size to the roster in the coming days. The next official signing period for basketball begins April 12.
