GRAND LAKE — Grand Lake started to wear down in the second half, but the Hornets survived a battle of unbeaten teams Thursday night, beating Oakdale 26-20 in overtime.

In overtime, Kent Zaunbrecher tackled Oakdale quarterback Cade Dauzat for a loss and the Hornets forced an incomplete pass on fourth down.

Oakdale was called for an unsportsmanlike penalty that gave the Hornets the ball on the 5-yard line, and Grand Lake quarterback Conner Guillotte followed his offensive line for the winning score.

Ian Vigo led the Hornets with 197 yards and two scores on 21 carries. Bryce Guillory added 96 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Cedric Allison led the Warriors (2-1) with 140 yards on 26 carries but was held out of the end zone for the first time this season.

Grand Lake is 4-0 for the third time in four seasons.

Grand Lake owned the first half, but Oakdale controlled the second.

Down 12-0 at the break, the Warriors opened the second half with an 8-minute, 16-play drive capped by an 8-yard run by Ruffin George to pull within 12-6.

Just before the end of the third quarter, Elijah Anderson fielded a punt and broke several tackles for a 62-yard return to tie the score at 12-12. Deekota Johnson tossed a 2-point conversion pass to Allison for the Warriors’ first lead, 14-12.

Oakdale recovered a fumble with 4:27 left and nearly fumbled the ball away inside the Hornets’ 5-yard line, but Dauzat picked up and ran it in to tie the score at 20-20 with 1:06 left in regulation.

Vigo had a stellar first half, picking up 167 yards on 11 carries. He had three runs longer than 40 yards, including a 41-yard run in the first quarter and a 49-yard sprint in the second quarter.

Grand Lake contained Allison in the first half, limiting him to 71 yards on 14 carries.

The Hornets forced the Warriors to turn the ball over on downs on their first possession then punt on the second followed by two turnovers. With 9:31 left in the second quarter, Brent Hardesty knocked the ball loose and Kaden Styron fell on it. That set up Vigo’s second score.
