Harvey newest member of Lake Charles City Council

The Lake Charles City Council has a new District A councilman following Saturday’s election.

Ronnie Harvey Jr. received 870 votes, or 72 percent, while T.A. Jones received 341 votes, or 28 percent. Both are Democrats.

The unofficial turnout for the election was 17 percent, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office.

Harvey and Jones ran for the council seat formerly held by Mary Morris, who died last August after being elected to her third term.

Jones spent 35 years working for the Lake Charles Fire Department and retired as chief of fire prevention. He also serves on the Calcasieu Parish East Gravity Drainage Board. Harvey is the principal at Washington-Marion Magnet High School.

In Sulphur, voters elected Nicholas Nezat as councilman for District 2.

Nezat received 169 votes, or 54 percent. Michael “Mike” Koonce received 143 votes, or 46 percent. Both are Republicans.
