THIBODAUX (AP) — A state judge has ruled that 30-year-old Jeremiah Wright cannot understand the first-degree murder charge against him or help his defense.

Judge John LeBlanc based his ruling Tuesday on reports from two court-appointed psychiatrists. He then put both reports under seal.

District Attorney Camille Morvant did not object. Neither he nor defense attorney Kerry Cuccia (KOO-chuh) submitted any evidence or asked to question either psychiatrist.

Wright is accused of beheading his 7-year-old disabled son, Jori Lirette on Aug. 14. The child’s mother, 27-year-old Jesslyn Lirette wept quietly, sniffling after the ruling was announced.

Wright will now go to a state mental hospital for treatment.

Family members did not comment either on their way into or out of the courthouse.FILE – In this Aug. 16
