Lemoine named tops in Class 1A

Elton running back Marcus Lemoine led the way for Southwest Louisiana on the 2014 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 1A all-state football team, picking up the Offensive MVP honor.

Lemoine, who earned his second consecutive selection to the team, was among Ouachita Christian’s Chance Clowers and Mangham’s Jakarie Nichols as finalists for the award.

The senior finished the 2014 campaign with 2,525 rushing yards, 383 receiving yards and 40 total touchdowns — 30 rushing, four receiving, three punt returns, two kickoff returns and one interception return. He would lead the Indians to a first-round home playoff game and a second round appearance for the second straight year.

Joining Lemoine on the team is teammate Dylan Landry. The junior punter averaged 36 yards per punt.

Basile jack-of-all-trades Kendrick Ceaser also made a return appearance on the all-state team. The senior was named the team’s kick returner for the third straight time.

Hamilton Christian senior Chris Elly (4 interceptions) assumed the final spot from the Lake Area, making the team at defensive back.

Honorable mentions from the area were linemen Easton Massey and Brandon Blackwell of Hamilton, offensive lineman Daren Fontenot of Basile, and the East Beauregard trio of Joe Gray, Coleton Guidry and Thad Schecher.

Haynesville linebacker Kendrick Jackson was named the defensive MVP after leading the Golden Tornado to its 17th state championship in school history. The senior is committed to the University of Arizona and finished the year with 118 tackles, 24 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and one interception.

Haynesville coach David Franklin was named Coach of the Year for the first time.

Leading the way were four selections from the Division IV state champion Ouachita Christian Eagles. They were senior quarterback Chance Clowers (3,135 yards 31 TDs), senior receiver Jake Slaughter (1,165 yards 17 TDs), junior offensive lineman Che’ Manning, senior kicker Whit Chapman (11 field goals) and senior defensive back Garryn Chowns (10 INTs).

The other receivers were West St. John senior Morell Bartholomew (972 yards 19 TDs) and Plain Dealing senior Isaac Jacobs (1,168 yards 14 TDs).

Rounding out the offensive line are Vermilion Catholic’s Paul Veazey, Southern Lab’s Trevas Samuel and the Mangham duo of Kasey Miller and Jeff Fuller.

Kentwood’s Shyheim Carter was named the team’s athlete after more than 2,500 all purpose yards and 22 touchdowns. He also had five interceptions on defense.

On the defensive line are Covenant Christian junior Sashen Stadium (119 tackles), Madison Prep junior Malcolm Roach (20 sacks), Ascension Catholic senior Delmond Landry (16 sacks) and Haynesville senior Kendall Hampton (10 sacks).

The other three linebackers are Haynesville junior Keandre Harris (38 TFL), Southern Lab senior Javahn Ferguson (138 tackles) and West St. John senior Trey Nathan (107 tackles).

Central Catholic senior Charlie Barron (10 INTs) and Southern Lab junior Jonard Robinson (12 INTs) round out the defensive backs.(Rick Hickman/American Press)
