Natchitoches Central takes back 5A title

Natchitoches Central avenged last year’s Class 5A championship game loss to Scotlandville with a 54-52 win over the Hornets Friday night in the Top 28 tournament at Burton Coliseum.

<span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">Natchitoches Central beat Scotlandville (34-3) in the 2013 championship game as well, with the Hornets beating the Chiefs for the title last year.</span>

<span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">Brandon Rachal led the Chiefs to th</span><span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">e win with 24 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Rachal scored eight points in the third quarter, giving the Chiefs the lead for good with a putback basket to end the quarter.</span>

<span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">Summerfield scored the game’s last 16 points to pull away from the two-time defending champion.</span>

<span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">The win gave the Rebels (23-7) a sweep of the Class C basketball titles. Randy Carlisle served as head coach of both teams. The girls won the state title with a win over Pleasant Hill in Hammond last week.</span>

<span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">Trey Washington was named game MVP after scoring 22 points and eight rebounds. Washington scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.</span>

<span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">John Buggs finished with 19 points for Summerfield. Patrick Browder added 13 points and 10 rebounds while Phendray Jackson scored 12 points.</span>

<span class="R~sep~ACopyBody">Justin Onwuzulike led New Living Word (26-19) with 14 points. Jeremy Patton added 11 and Fredrion Evans and Rashaan Proctor scored 10 each.</span>
