The trial of a man accused of killing another man off La. 27 in Carlyss in 2011 was postponed until March 17.

David Caleb Fontenot, 23, was scheduled to go to trial Monday on charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder and solicitation for murder charges, but his defense attorney, Robert Shelton, requested the continuance because he only recently enrolled as counsel.

Shelton replaced Michael McHale as Fontenot’s conflict attorney after McHale left the Public Defenders Office.

Judge Kent Savoie said he will not grant any more continuances in the case.

Fontenot is accused of gunning down 20-year-old Stephin Bergeron in 2011.

Fontenot’s co-defendant, Devin Badon, pleaded guilty in June to negligent homicide. Prosecutors claim Badon helped Fontenot obtain weapons and ammunition, but Fontenot pulled the trigger.

Fontenot was charged with solicitation of murder in January after authorities said he was heard on a jail phone attempting to have a witness killed.””
