Barbe sweeps own Buc Relays

The girls team title at the Barbe Buc Relays came down to the wire on Friday.

Heading into the final event — the 4×400-meter relay — Barbe led Sulphur by 3.33 points.

Barbe needed to finish one spot ahead of Sulphur in the relay to win the meet. The Bucs ended up placing three spots ahead of the Tors to take second in the event with a time of 4 minutes, 16.77 seconds. Sam Houston won the event with a time of 4:12.54 and Sulphur finished fifth.

Barbe finished with 131.33 points, followed by Sulphur (122) and Sam Houston (81.33).

Senior distance runner Ciara Gilroy led the Bucs, scoring 32.5 points to win outstanding track honors. Gilroy easily won the 800 (2:21.39), 1,600 (5:30.35) and 3,200  (12:22.19), none by fewer than 12 seconds. She also ran the anchor leg on the 4×400.

Barbe’s Chadlyn Gladney tied Sulphur’s Malasia Sonnier for outstanding track honors. Gladney jumped 15 feet, 9 ½ inches to win the long jump and took second in high jump after clearing 5 feet. Sonnier won the javelin with one of the area’s best throws this season, 119-6, and placed second in the discus (97-0), behind teammate Tristan Caldwell (99-5).

Also for the Barbe girls, Elizabeth Rubino won the shot put (35-2) and Kiera Guillory won the triple jump (34-7).

Sulphur sprinter Latyana won a pair of races, claiming the 100 (12.98) and 200 (26.58).

Barbe won the boys title by six points over Sulphur, 128-122.

The Barbe boys were paced by Jarden James, who swept the hurdle events handily to win outstanding track honors. He won the 110-meter hurdles by 1.03 seconds with a time of 15.37 seconds and he won the 300 by 1.08 seconds over LaGrange’s Darrius Wallace with a time of 40.34. He was also part of the winning 4×400-meter relay team.

Barbe also had wins in the pole vault and the 400. Brendan Ford won the pole vault with a height of 14-6, while Westlake’s Brock Meyer and Andrew Treme tied for second at 14-0.

The 400 was one of the closest finishes of the night, with the top three finishers separated by a mere .26 seconds. Barbe’s Gage Socha won with a time of 52.45 seconds with Iowa’s Cejae Ceasar .07 seconds behind at 52.52. Sulphur’s Eric Buchanan was third at 52.71 seconds.

The runner-up Tors scored 91 of their 122 points on the track with a strong showing in the distance races. The Tors scored 44 points in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Jacob Darbonne won the 800 (2:05.97), Jonathon Deville took the 1,600 (4:58.88) and Hayden Foolkes ran away with the 3,200 (10:56.31).

Hamilton Christian’s Kierston Stevenson won boys outstanding field honors with a second-place finish in the long jump and a third in the triple jump.

Sulphur’s Malasia Sonnier placed second in the discus and won the javelin on Friday at the Barbe Buc Relays.
