Unemployment
benefits

When is the $600 unemployment benefit expected to end?

The $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief law — the CARES Act — gives an extra $600 a week in federal aid to unemployed workers.

The average worker received about $378 a week in state unemployment benefits prior to the relief law, according to the U.S. Labor Department. The CARES Act boosts that weekly total to $978 a week — a 159 percent increase.

That enhancement ends after July 31. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Wednesday the next round of financial relief for Americans would likely not extend the benefit.

Nearly 39 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits since mid-March, according to the Labor Department.
