Students bring magical underwater world to life

The LaGrange High Performing Arts Department will present Disney’s “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

People of all ages will enjoy the performance featuring beloved songs from the cinema original like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl,” Shelly Buller, theatre director, said.

With a cast of nearly 80 students to bring to life the magical underwater world, Buller said the show will also feature amazing costumes and technical elements like lighting, projections and bubbles.

“My favorite special effects are the scenes with Ursula casting a spell and the bubbles in “Under the Sea,” she said.

Students have been preparing for the musical since August, resulting in this week’s final work of polished singing, dancing and acting.

This school year LaGrange began a new theatre initiative by opening its classes to other high schools in the district. Students from Alfred M. Barbe, Iowa, Sam Houston and Washington-Marion will be included in the cast.

The show’s whimsical designs and plot will appeal to children and is sure to spark nostalgia for adults watched the film as a child, Buller said.

“I have noticed that people that grew up watching “The Little Mermaid” in the late 80’s and early 90’s are excited to see the show!”

The “Jr.” designation marks the show as a condensed version of the cartoon but maintains all of the key elements of the original.

The show’s runtime is approximately one hour and 10 minutes with no intermission “making it a manageable performance time for our young audiences,” Buller said.

Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the front office during school hours or at the door.
