Opening reception today for Smithsonian water exhibit
Jennings one of six cities in state to host display
JENNINGS — The Zigler Art Museum, 154 N. Main Street, is hosting the Smithsonian Water/Ways Exhibit, on display through Feb. 9.
An opening reception is 5:30-7:30 p.m. today.
The exhibit is in partnership with the Louisiana Endowment for Humanities and Walton Family Foundation as part of the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street program. Jennings is one of six communities in the state selected to host the exhibit.
“I see this as an opportunity to bring a quality, educational and informative program to our parish and town,” Museum Director Celia Joe Black said. “The program was developed to travel across the country so that people who don’t have the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. can have an opportunity to access these programs.”
The exhibit features five double-sided kiosks with photographs, text panels and focuses on the environmental, cultural and historical innfluence of water, the positive and negative effects of water on the environment and the economic impact of water, Black said. It also includes free-standing touchscreen interactive computer kiosks with video and audio content.
“Water plays an important role in our lives and it is something we have to take care of,” Black said. “I feel honored to be able to share this exhibit with the public.”
In addition, the museum will host weekly programs and discussions on water and agriculture, watercolors, coastal restoration, water conservation and more.
A special Children’s Day will be hosted at 10 a.m. Jan. 19 featuring water-related crafts and baby alligators. The event will end with a special showing of Tom Sawyer at 7 p.m. at the Strand Theatre.
Schools and other groups are urged to attend. Groups of 20 or more should make a reservation to view the exhibit.
The museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
