There were plenty of results that caught the eye last week, including Sulphur’s first win over Barbe in a decade, Comeaux coming out of nowhere to upset Acadiana and Notre Dame starting District 6-2A play in style with an impressive win over Kaplan.

The fun continues this week, as several games took on added importance in light of last week’s results. Lake Charles College Prep, one of the metro area’s two unbeaten teams, hosts Notre Dame Thursday night. The Blazers have been impressive to watch but have yet to notch an eye-popping win. The six teams the Blazers have defeated have combined for only seven wins all season.

That all changes Thursday when the Pioneers come to town. Notre Dame, led by coaching legend Lewis Cook, is also undefeated and is the top-ranked team in Class 2A. Unlike the Blazers, the Pioneers have several high profile wins this season, knocking off LaGrange, Breaux Bridge, Teurlings Catholic, Catholic-New Iberia, Kaplan and Kinder. Of ND’s six opponents, only LaGrange is under .500.

A win for Prep would have some tangible results, namely in the form of power points as the Blazers seek to finish among the top four seeds for the Class 3A playoffs. Just as important, the Blazers would get a big confidence boost from a good showing against one of the state’s top programs. The Blazers have already clinched program’s first winning season. After suffering through a two-win season in its Class 3A debut last season, the Blazers have an opportunity this week to show it can hang with the big boys.

The other city area school with a perfect record, Sam Houston, also faces a big test against a state power when it plays at Acadiana Friday night. The Broncos are the lone District 3-5A team yet to lose a game, and have another advantage with three straight home games to end the regular season.

Sam Houston’s offense has been receiving lots of attention while averaging 38 points per game on the season, but the defense has made a big impact lately, allowing only 9 points per game in three district wins, including a shutout of LaGrange last week. The Broncos allowed only 130 yards against the Gators, and have yet to allow an opponent to run for 200 yards in a game.

Acadiana has run for at least 244 every week this season and at least 313 in each of the past three weeks.

Another strong showing by the Broncos defense could put them in complete control of the district race. The Broncos will have plenty of motivation after allowing 70 points to Acadiana in a shutout loss last season.

With Barbe coming up next week, just a split should be enough to earn the Broncos a share of the district title. But after such a great start to the season, that might seem like a disappointment to the Broncos, who have had a winning district record just once (in 2015) since moving up to 5A in 2011.

In 2A, the Welsh-Lake Arthur rivalry has big stakes. The Greyhounds had to forfeit an earlier win, which cost them power points, but will come in with momentum after knocking off Jennings in a last-minute win last week. Little has gone wrong for the Tigers, who are 5-1 and have been piling up the points at a rate of 40 per game on the season. The Tigers have a trio of good runners in Daylon Charles and Tory and Torrell Levias. The trio have combined for 1,320 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season. QB Deuce Duhon and WR Travarius Achane have connected on seven touchdowns on the season and make opponents pay for crowding the line to stop the run.

Motivation is never an issue for Lake Arthur when Welsh is the opponent, but a quality win would do wonders for the Tigers as they enter a brutal schedule over the remainder of the season, with games against Welsh, Kinder, Notre Dame and Class 3A Westlake.

In 1A, the district title could be on the line as undefeated Oberlin visits St. Edmund, which is 5-1 overall and undefeated in district play. The Tigers have the stingiest defense in the area, having allowed only 22 points on the season. St. Edmund ran the table in district play last season and has already knocked off Basile and Elton this season.

Oberlin still has games with Basile and Elton, but those are both at home. This week will be their biggest test, and likely one they must win to claim the district title.
