School recently earned a 2018 Partnership School Award from the National Network of Partnership Schools.

The network, part of John Hopkins University, partners with elementary, middle and high schools across the country, using evidence-based practices to improve family and community relations and create better learning environments for students.

“College Oaks Elementary is a wonderful example of the caring, child-centered support that comes from a true neighborhood school,” said Karl Bruchhaus, Calcasieu Parish School Board superintendent. “The education team — including administrators, teachers, support employees and parents — help to nurture children daily to provide a comforting environment for educational experiences.”

Holly Holland, school district spokeswoman, said NNPS Director Joyce L. Epstein praised College Oaks for creating a “welcoming climate” that engages “parents and community partners in ways that improve student attendance, behavior, achievement, health, high school graduation rates and other student outcomes.”

As part of its partnership with NNPS, College Oaks plans included campus development of teamwork and leadership. Leadership was required to submit goallinked plans for action and implementation throughout the school year.

NNPS then evaluated the program’s success according to its research-based rubric and “the school will continue to strengthen its program of school, family, and community partnerships in the new school year to help all students succeed at high levels,” Holland said.

College Oaks, along with other 2018 winners, will be featured in the John Hopkins University national publication “Promising Partnership Practices.”
