Smith voted DeQuincy mayor

The city of DeQuincy has elected Republican Riley Smith as its next mayor.

Smith finished with 533 votes, or 50 percent, according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State.

Republican Heather Royer received 284 votes, or 27 percent, and James B. Harris, no party, received 254 votes, or 24 percent.

Smith is the first mayor elected in at least 80 years who is not a DeQuincy native. A business owner for more than 16 years, Smith said during his campaign that he would not accept a salary if elected.

“I want to see DeQuincy marketed as a great place to live and raise our families,” Smith told the American Press. “I believe I have the experience and qualifications needed to build unity, meet the needs of the community and manage the day-to-day operations of the city. It is my vision to see DeQuincy grow, but never lose the feel of a ‘bedroom community.’”””DeQuincy signSpecial to the American Press
