Life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds are likely in southeastern Louisiana today as Gordon is expected to make landfall along the Mississippi coast as a Category 1 hurricane.

“For our region, one to three inches of rain is expected Wednesday through Friday,” National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Erickson said during a weather briefing Tuesday.

Erickson said heavier rain will be possible, depending on where outer rainbands of Gordon develop the rest of the week.

“In the rainbands, there will be a risk for flooding, isolated tornadoes and gusty winds of 40 mph,” he said.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Tropical Storm Gordon was moving northwest towards the central Gulf Coast.

“As Gordon moves inland on Wednesday and Thursday, we expect to see some outer rainbands in our region, with the most likely area being east of Alexandria to the Lafayette line on Wednesday, and east of Leesville-Fort Polk to Crowley and the Franklin line on Thursday,” Erickson said.

He said heavy rain will result in flash flooding along the path of Gordon as it moves inland.

“At the coast, tides will run a foot above normal this week,” he said. “Minor coastal flooding is possible during periods of high tides.”
