Broncos meet Rams in high-stakes game

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss Week 7 games involving area large schools.

What is the most interesting game?

WA: Tioga at DeRidder. Both teams are 4-2 and can put points on the board as the Indians average 34 points per game and the Dragons score 31 ppg. DeRidder is 4-0 when scoring at least 28 points. Tioga allows 20 ppg and has allowed 28 or more just once, in a 48-35 loss to Class 5A Pineville. The Dragons open District 3-4A play with games against the only other teams with winning records when they travel to Leesville next week.

RA: Sam Houston at Acadiana. The stakes are high. The Broncos lead District 3-5A at 3-0, are 6-0 for the first time since 1989 and have never started a season 7-0. Acadiana is the perennial power in the district but lost 31-30 to Comeaux last week and needs to win to stay in the district race. The key for Sam Houston will be defense after giving up 70 to the Rams’ split-back veer last year.

What is the best in-game matchup?

WA: Sam Houston RB Gerron Duhon vs. Acadiana run defense. Duhon was held to a season-low 49 yards last week but still found the end zone four times, giving him a rushing TD in every game he has played this season. Acadiana gave up 246 yards on the ground in last week’s loss to Comeaux and has allowed at least 196 yards in a game three times.

RA: Lake Charles College Prep defense vs. Notre Dame running game. LCCP hasn’t allowed more than 18 points and just 9.7 ppg. The Trailblazers have done it by applying pressure in the backfield with 72 tackles for a loss in six games, led by defensive linemen Jacalon Pitre (13) and Tavonn Alexander (12) and linebacker Dylan Vincent (12). Stacking the box will be key to stopping the Pios’ run game that is putting up nearly 300 yards a game, led by Noah Bourgeois (769 yards, 11 TDs).

Who is a player to watch?

WA: Westlake running back J.J. Ross is a workhorse who gained 315 yards in last week’s game against Washington-Marion. He has run for more than 100 yards in all but one game and can crack the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 153 against Jennings.

RA: Sulphur RB/WR Branden Walker. The Houston Baptist commitment has added a new facet to his game recently, starting the last two games at running back. He rushed for a career-high 90 yards and a touchdown last week and still managed to catch six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Walker will face one of the better pass defenses in the area this week in LaGrange. The Gators are winless but are allowing fewer than 160 yards through the air.””Three-point Stance
