Prescription assistance program helps seniors find lower drug prices
Making sure that one can afford necessary prescriptions, especially the older we get, can be a real headache, but it doesn’t have to be. There are programs that can assist with those extra costs that come along.
The Louisiana SenioRx Program is a prescription assistance program developed for Louisiana adults who are ages 60 and over as well as persons with disabilities diagnosed with chronic medical conditions that require medication on a regular basis.
Its mission is simple: to link qualifying senior citizens, and others who qualify, with pharmaceutical aid programs.
The program, which started more than 10 years ago, strives to reduce economic stress, promote better health and improve the quality of life of Louisiana’s older and disabled population by providing ways to reduce the expense of medication.
Some are able to get certain medications for free while others might qualify for greatly reduced prices.
In 2017, the program reportedly saved clients more than $700,000.
Eligibility and application requirements vary, so how do you find out if you are eligible?
Louisiana SenioRx staff will go over your application with you and assist you throughout the process to see if you qualify.
If you have prescription insurance or Medicare Part D, your application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the manufacturer.
The staff at Calcasieu Council on Aging works with seniors every day in assisting them with multiple needs, including the Louisiana SenioRx Program.
According to program organizers, there are times that “seniors have to choose whether they want to pay for their groceries and eat or get their medicines to stay healthy.”
This program aims to help seniors cut those prescription costs so that they don’t have to spend their money on medications.
When program recipients are deemed eligible, they receive a 90-day supply of medication, and the staff at Council on Aging organizes and assists in getting them their refills.
