Fried seafood and chicken served up hot and fresh

My first experience eating shrimp from Golden Hooks in Sulphur happened at work. A few months ago, the folks in the advertising department were having a meeting that involved food in one of the conference rooms. After the meeting, account rep Abby Ecker invited me to try some fried shrimp from Golden Hooks. She had brought it in for the meeting.

"It’s really good. You might want to do a food review on them," she said. And she was right. The shrimp was delicious.Golden Hooks sign

That sampling of shrimp was what prompted my Saturday visit to Golden Hooks at 1504 Ruth St. in Sulphur with my No. 1 eating partner, my husband Neil. It was late afternoon and we had the whole place to ourselves.

Golden Hooks is not big. It’s not fancy. In fact, if you want live plants, paintings on the wall, soft music and candlelight, you might want to go somewhere else. At Golden Hooks, It’s all about the thing that matters most at a restaurant: the food. Think of Golden Hooks as a no-frills fast-food-type place where top-notch fried seafood and chicken are served.

Customers can dine it or get orders to go. A drive-through window makes things even faster and more convenient. In fact, if you call ahead, they’ll have your order waiting when you arrive. Customers can also order using the Waitr app.

Neil and I both tried the combo dinners. Each of these fried-food feasts comes with a drink and fries. I had the No. 1: half fish fillets/half shrimp for $9.35. Neil had the No. 9: half scallops/half shrimp for $14.99. The dinners were fried up fresh and hot while we waited. Service was quick. Portions are generous. I brought much of my dinner home and made another meal of it the next day.

The batter used to fry the food is seasoned well, and while the food is fried, it’s not greasy.

Want variety? Fried gizzards, liver, oysters, conch, chicken tenders and wings can also be ordered at Golden Hooks. If you’ve got a large crowd to feed, consider their 30-piece order of fish fillets for $55.99, the 100 pieces of shrimp for $49.99 or the 30 chicken tenders for $45.99. There are also hot sandwiches, po’boys, salads and sides available.

Golden Hooks is located at 1504 Ruth St. between Pumpelly Tire and Tobacco Plus. Hours are Mon. – Sat., 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sun., 11 a.m. -7 p.m. Call them at (337)-888-3216 or (337)-888-3215.
