LC man arrested for fourth DWI

A 40-year-old man has been arrested for his fourth DWI after being stopped by deputies for a traffic violation on U.S. 171 in Moss Bluff.

Barry D. Handy, 1579 Georgia Road, has a bond of $110,250 that was set by Judge David Ritchie.

During the traffic stop by deputies with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, they detected an odor of alcohol. They also observed Handy had bloodshot eyes and an unsteady balance along with slurred speech.

Handy told deputies he had a hardship license due to previous DWI offenses and was supposed to have an ignition interlock device on his vehicle, which he did not have.

He also told deputies he had been drinking and they located two bottles of alcohol inside his truck.

Handy was arrested and transported to the sheriff’s office for a standard field sobriety test which he refused. Deputies also attempted to perform a breath intoxilyzer test, which he also refused.

After deputies learned Handy had three previous DWI arrests in the past 10 years, they obtained a warrant to have his blood drawn for toxicology tests and he was transported to a local hospital.

He was then charged with fourth-offense DWI, failure to signal, and operating unlawfully with a hardship license. He was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.

In addition to his bond, Ritchie set conditions including that Handy cannot drive without permission from the courts; he must wear an alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet; must not consume any alcoholic beverages, and will be subject to random drug and alcohol screenings.
