Fatal shooting in Carlyss: Arrest made, one person wounded

One man is dead and a woman is critically injured after a shooting in Sweet Gum Mobile Home Park in Carlyss, off Hwy. 1256 south of the I-10 overpass.

One CPSO deputy said the call came in reporting shots fired at about 3:35 p.m. from a resident of the Park.

When deputies arrived after the call, they located two victims inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene. The other was transported to a local hospital, in serious condition.

A suspect in the case, 22-year-old Jonathan Joseph Waite, Sulphur, has been arrested and is in custody. He fled the scene on foot, and was apprehended at 4:50 p.m.about a block from the incident on Ridgecrest.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso, deputies and investigators were on site. The Sheriff said it might be likely that the incident was “domestic in nature.” Calcasieu Parish District Attorney Stephen Dwight also arrived at the scene not long after the incident.

This investigation is in the preliminary stages, and no further information is available at this time.  The investigation is continuing and the name of the deceased victim is being withheld, pending next of kin notification.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged.   A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
