Vinton seeks grant for school sidewalks

VINTON — Mayor Kenneth Stinson said the administration is seeking funding for sidewalks through a state program.

“We’re applying for a grant to do a sidewalk from behind the elementary school north, then east along the side of the middle school and it will continue on to Industrial Street,” said Stinson at last week’s town council meeting. “This will help get the kids off the street.”

Funding is sought from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s Safe Routes to Public Places program.

Stinson also reported the camera work on the sewer project is complete. The engineer is finalizing the scope of the project and Stinson said the administration will likely ask the council for authorization to go out for bids next month.

According to Public Works Director Terry Vice, there have been electrical wire thefts in the town. Wire has been taken from the conduit between the meter and the lift station and from Glen Meadows Trailer Park.

Fire Chief Chris Vice said the fire truck and pump testing is complete. He said hydrant flow testing will commence next week.

The chief also reported a vehicle fatality that occurred around lunchtime Tuesday on La. 108, south of Vinton.

“The driver would probably still be with us, if he’d been wearing a seatbelt,” Vice said. “He was ejected and suffered fatal injuries. Louisiana State Police surmised he would have had significant injuries but would probably have survived if he had been wearing his seatbelt.”
