Softball powers DeRidder, Sam Houston square off St. Edmund, Grand Lake meet
In this edition of The Strike Zone, Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss Tuesday’s baseball and softball schedule.
What is the best baseball or softball on the schedule today?
WA: DeRidder at Sam Houston softball. Both teams made it to Sulphur last year and are good bets to return this year. They played a great 2-0 game in DeRidder earlier this season.
RA: St. Edmund at Grand Lake. Grand Lake is perfect in District 4-1A play at 5-0, but the Blue Jays gave the Hornets a run for their money in Eunice in the first match up, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh before Grand Lake was able to hold on for the 9-8 win.
Who is a player to watch?
WA: Barbe center fielder Carter Quinn had a big game Sunday to help Barbe get into a first place tie in District 3-5A, getting two hits and an RBI in a win against Sulphur. The Bucs have a tough game at home today against New Iberia, which they need to win to stay in the district title chase.
RA: Sam Houston catcher Silas Ardoin. The junior hit three doubles last week including a pair with three RBIs in a 10-0 win over LaGrange. The Broncos have been up and down lately, but have a huge opportunity when they take on Acadiana on the road today. Sam Houston, Acadiana, Barbe and Sulphur are in a four-way tie for first in District 3-5A.
What active coach could join Barbe’s Glenn Cecchini in the state Hall of Fame?
WA: Sulphur’s Julie Mancuso. She has three state titles, and Sulphur’s tremendous job as host of the state tournament over the past 17 years has helped raise both the profile of that event as well as the popularity of the sport in the area.
RA: Sam Houston’s Beth Domingue. She has won four state titles while coaching at her alma mater and won one as a player in 2000, making her a prime candidate for the hall of fame.
