Cowgirls sweep doubleheader from Lamar

Ashley Vallejo extended her conference winning streak to 12 games while leading McNeese State to a 7-4 win over Lamar in the first game of a Friday doubleheader in Beaumont, Texas.

The Cowgirls swept the doubleheader with a 4-2 win in Game 2.

The wins kept the Cowgirls (25-10) perfect in Southland Conference play at 8-0 with their sixth consecutive victory.

Vallejo (7-7) has not lost in conference play over two seasons, going 9-0 last season and winning all three starts this season. She allowed three runs over four innings with two strikeouts.

The Cowgirls took the lead for good in the third inning on a two-run single by Mariana Torres to score Alayis Seneca and Reese Reyna.

Kaylee Lopez added a two-RBI double in the fifth and McNeese scored three runs in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Rylie Bouvier and a two-run double by Crislyne Moreno.

Bouvier, Seneca, Torres and Lopez each had two hits for the Cowgirls.

Sam Bean hit a two-run homer for Lamar (10-24, 3-5), which twice pulled within 2-1 in the fourth inning and 4-3 in the fifth before McNeese put the game away with the three-run sixth inning.

Whitney Tate pitched the final three innings to earn her first save. Tate, the Cowgirls’ ace, pitched a 2-0 shutout of Sam Houston State on Wednesday.

McNeese, which had thrown four consecutive shutouts, saw its scoreless inning streak end at 29.

In Game 2, Shaelyn Sanders (4-0) earned the win, allowing one run in four innings. She has allowed one run in 11 innings over her past two starts.

Lindsay Davis allowed one hit in three innings of relief to earn her third save.

Reyna hit a single to score Delaney Dunham in the fifth inning to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead.
