Sam Houston’s Chevy Coleman first female to win title at Jesse James Southwest Shootout

Sam Houston’s Chevy Coleman became the first female to win a weight class at the Jesse James Southwest Shootout on Saturday at the Sulphur High School 9th grade campus.

Coleman, a sophomore, won the 106-pound title at the 10th edition of the tournament. She won her first match in a narrow 11-8 decision over Rosepine’s Zach Preece. Coleman (41-20) claimed another win by forfeit, then pinned Sulphur’s Seth Gordon and Caleb Walker to finish her run to the title.

Coleman’s brother, Pollex Coleman, won the 126-pound title after winning at 120 last year. Other repeat winners included St. Louis Catholic’s Graham Montet and Luke Caballero and Sulphur’s Blayden Laidlaw.

Coleman (36-13) had an impressive run through the 126-pound bracket, winning four matches by pin, with none making it out of the first period. He pinned Sulphur’s Kylan Fontenot in the finals in 1:18. Laidlaw (16-5) all his matches by pin, taking down Sam Houston’s Colt Fisher in 2:58 in the mixed heavyweight (220 and 285 pounds) bracket.

Caballero (30-12) and Montet (18-2) won the 113-pound and 182-pound titles, respectively, after each went 3-0.

The tournament featured 89 wrestlers from eight Southwest La. schools (DeQuincy, Lake Charles College Prep, Rosepine, Sam Houston, South Beauregard, St. Louis Catholic, Sulphur, Vinton)

Sulphur won five of 13 weight classes, while Sam Houston and St. Louis claimed three apiece.

Other winners included Sulphur’s Jess LeBlanc (132 lbs), Miguel Andrusia (138 lbs), Conner Butter (145 lbs) and Isaias LeBaron (160 lbs) Sam Houston’s Peyton Miller (152 lbs), St. Louis Catholic’s Luke Mere (195 lbs), DeQuincy’s Lawton Royer (113 lbs) and Vinton’s Jordan Rogers (170 lbs).
