Lake Charles College Prep flexed it’s depth early and rode the hot hand of Elijah Garrick late in a 54-41 opening round win over Washington-Marion at the Hamilton Christian/Showdown in the Lake tournament.

The Blazers (4-1) advance to play Wossman at 8:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Prep went on a 13-0 run early in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Garrick dunked after making a steak to put the Blazers ahead 13-12. E.J. Franklin added a three-point play and Josiah Bushnell scored on a pass from Brandon Batiste to cap the run and give the Blazers a 20-12 lead.

Ten Blazers scored in the game. Head coach Sean Andrus rotated two units of five in the first half.

“We preach to the guys to grind all the time and have ten playing as one,” Andrus said. “The rotation in the first quarter helped us in the second as far as having fresh legs. Defensively we were able to push the pace, get live ball turnovers and then get to the rim.”

W-Marion (0-1) cut a 17-point fourth quarter deficit to nine with 2:36 left, but Prep closed the game with a 5-1 run. Garrick scored nine of his team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter.

“He’s special,” Andrus said. “He’s better known for football, but he’s a good basketball player. We look to him and Ryan Batiste to score and tonight he carried the load. We’re proud of him.”

Kishaun Stevens led W-M with 15 points. Nathaniel Smith added 10.

W-M will play in a consolation game at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
