A Welsh teenager is facing charges for allegedly shooting a Kinder student Friday at a back-to-school party that led to rumors of a threat of a school shooting on Monday.

Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert III said a16-year-old from Welsh was arrested Saturday for attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a dangerous instrumentality.

Additional charges and arrests are expected following further investigation, Hebert said.

The victim, 18-year-old Landon Schmitz of Kinder, was shot in the abdomen while trying to break up a fight that broke out Friday at a private back-to-school party held at a camp on Old Ferry Road, southwest of Kinder near Indian Village.

“Apparently there was a back-to-school party being held for just local folks, but someone posted it on social media and several out-of-towners showed up uninvited, a fight began and the suspect pulled out a pistol and shot the victim in the stomach,” Hebert said.

Schmitz was airlifted to an area hospital where he remains in stable condition Monday after undergoing surgery this weekend.

More than two dozen high school students, mainly from the Kinder area, were attending the private party at the camp, according to Hebert. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators are working to determine if any adult chaperones were at the party at the time of the shooting.

On Sunday, Kinder police officers and sheriff’s deputies were made aware of rumors circulating concerning threats being made about Kinder High School.

“The rumors started late Sunday night and as of this morning we have not been able to find any Facebook posts or reference to something happening,” Hebert said. “We believe those rumors have no merit to them and we don’t know if we have an active complaint. It appears to be a rumor that just took off.”

Out of an abundance of caution Kinder police and sheriff’s deputies were at the schools on Monday as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety.
