SULPHUR – Julia Mae Hammitt, 88 passed away on Jan. 22, 2022 in Webster, Texas, after a brief illness and is now at rest with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Julia was born on May 2, 1933, in Bridgeport, W. Va. and was the daughter of Gabriel and Sadie (Deffett) Michotte.  Julia grew up on her parent’s farm in Mt. Clare, W. Va. 

She attended Roosevelt Wilson High School in Clarksburg, W. Va., where she met the love of her life, David Hammitt.  After David graduated from West Virginia University they were married on May 26, 1956, in the Methodist Church in Quiet Dell, W. Va. 

They moved to Fort Bragg, N. C., where David was stationed as a Lieutenant in the US Army.  Upon completion of her husband’s service to his country they relocated to New Martinsville, W. Va., where they raised their three sons, Garry, Steven, and Bruce. It was a most happy time for all.

In 1973, the family relocated to Ponce, Puerto Rico where they lived for three years. Julia enjoyed the tropical climate and the family outings to the many beautiful beaches and the rain forest of Puerto Rico. 

In 1976, the family relocated to Sulphur, La.  The family was quickly welcomed by the friendly people of Southwestern Louisiana.  Julia happily lived on Diane Drive in Sulphur for over 40 years and made many good friends. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and cherished the love, support, and fellowship she received from her brothers and sisters in Christ at Trinity.

She enjoyed playing Bunko with her friends, and volunteering at Cal- Cam Hospital in Sulphur as a “Pink Lady” in the Ladies Auxiliary where she served for over 30 years and held positions as Vice President and President.  In her later years of service in the auxiliary, she enjoyed working in the hospital gift shop.  She also liked cooking and visiting with friends. Many afternoons were spent sitting around the coffee table with her close friends, drinking coffee and catching up on the events of the day.  She loved being around friends and family, especially during the holidays.  She also grew to enjoy watching Saints and LSU Football and Astros baseball with her sons.

In the final years of her life, Julia moved to League City, Texas, to be closer to her family and her grandchildren which she was very proud of and loved to dote on.

Julia was always proud of her West Virginia Heritage. Whenever she was asked where   she was from she would respond with a proud West “By God” West Virginia.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Gabriel and Sadie Michotte; her husband, David Hammitt; and her sister, Henriette Beebe. 

Julia is survived by her sons, Garry Hammitt and wife Debbie of Dickinson, Texas, Steven Hammitt and wife Deena of League City, Texas, and Bruce Hammitt and wife Lillian of Schertz, Texas; her three grandchildren, David Hammitt (Steve), Hayley Hammitt (Steve), and Selina Burns (Garry); and two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Jasper.  

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sulphur, La., with Pastor Charlie Miller officiating. Julia will be interred in eternal rest beside her husband at Mimosa Pines South Cemetery in Carlyss, La., following the service under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home.
