BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana Attorney General James “Buddy” Caldwell was hospitalized Wednesday after his vehicle veered off a highway in Madison Parish and struck a tree.

Louisiana State Police Trooper Albert Paxton said Caldwell suffered minor injuries in the accident, which happened about 7:15 a.m. on U.S. Highway 65.

Caldwell’s office said the attorney general was conscious and appeared to be in “fine condition,” but doctors at Madison Parish Hospital were performing tests on him as a precaution.

“As a precaution, he will be staying in the hospital overnight for observation per doctors’ orders,” said Amanda Larkins, a spokeswoman for his office.

He’s “in good spirits,” she said but did not provide further details about his condition.

Paxton said a witness who had been driving behind Caldwell’s Ford Expedition SUV told troopers the attorney general was driving north without apparent problem when the vehicle suddenly veered off the highway.

“The attorney general told the investigating trooper he was feeling nauseous. He may have passed out,” Paxton said.

Caldwell was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, the trooper said. Paxton said the trooper at the scene said Caldwell did not appear to be impaired when he was interviewed after the accident.
