Cowboys host La. Tech in weekend series

The McNeese State baseball team opens a three-game nonconference series against Louisiana Tech (2-6) at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Cowboy Diamond.

Saturday’s game starts at 3 p.m. while Sunday’s game will begin at 1 p.m.

The Cowboys (4-4) will likely go with the rotation of freshman pitcher Bryce Kingsley (1-1) on Friday and senior righty Blake Ware (1-1) Saturday. The Sunday starter has not yet to be determined.

Kingsley has made an immediate impact on the Cowboy pitching staff. The Lake Charles native ranks second in the Southland Conference with a 0.64 ERA after pitching two games while only allowing three runs on eight hits in 14.0 innings. Kingsley is also tied for fourth in the conference with 14 strikeouts.

Ware tossed nine shutout innings with six strikeouts in a 2-0 victory against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Feb. 23. He retired the final 16 batters he faced after allowing the first and only hit from UAPB in the fourth inning.

Louisiana Tech will counter with three righties. Sophomore Phil Maton (0.79 ERA, 14 strike outs) will start Friday, senior Trevor Peterson (4.50 ERA) will start Saturday and junior Richie Navarie (8.59) will go on Sunday.

The Cowboys offense is led by junior first baseman Chayse Marion, who is hitting .346 with four RBIs. Also for McNeese, junior outfielder Jackson Gooch is hitting .313 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs.

Louisiana Tech is hitting .228 as a team with 30 RBIs. Junior infielder Ryan Gebhardt leads the Bulldogs with a .379 average, four runs scored and six RBIs.””msu-logo-11-27-13
