‘Pop’ Murphy honored in 1988 for 45 years’ service

A. V. “Pop” Murphy received a plaque Monday from Jesse Knowles, a Mayor’s Armed Forces Committee representative, for longtime service to the committee and city.

Murphy, a World War II veteran, has been an active member of the Mayor’s Armed Forces Committee since its inception 45 years ago.

He entered the Army in October 1942 after working as a civilian transportation specialist at Camp Polk during the 1941 Louisiana maneuvers.

Murphy retired as a colonel.

Lake Area people

Carol A. Anning of Lake Charles, now a Washington, D. C. attorney, is listed in the current edition of Outstanding Young Women of America. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Anning of 2101 20th St., Anning has worked in the legal division of the U. S. Department of Commerce for the past six years.

Mark Chassay, grandson of Mrs. Marie Funk Derouen and Roger Chassay Sr., both of Lake Charles, has been admitted to the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in business administration.

The State Board of Certified Public Accountants of Louisiana has announced that Sara Roberts Baggett, Ginger Ann Foreman, Angela Hamilton Milner, Sherry Elaine Richey, Royce Thane Scimemi and Menda Hathaway Spell, all of Lake Charles, are among 167 candidates to pass the recent Uniform Certified Public Accountants Examination.

Vilton Matt of Lakeside National Bank of Lake Charles, has been elected president of the Texas-Louisiana Chapter of the Bank Administration Institute. Other officers include Herb Ryder of Cameron State Bank, vice president of monthly programs; Gordon David of Premier Bank of Lake Charles, vice president of finance. Clark Yelverton of Lakeside National Bank, John Perry of National Bank of Commerce of Lake Charles and Frances McClelland of Calcasieu Marine National Bank were elected to serve as directors for a one-year term.

American Legion Post 179 officers

SULPHUR — Carl Walters of the Andrus-O’Quain American Legion Post 179 in ceremonies Thursday night at the Ward 4 parish barn.

Installing officer was Leonard Walters of Crowley, Seventh District commander and nephew of the Sulphur post commander.

Also installed were Cleve O’Quain, first vice commander; B. F. Burns, second vice commander; Hesby Fontenot, third vice commander; San Holden Jr., finance officer; Billy Murrell, adjutant; J. R. (Pat) Donovan, service officer; Clopha Boudreaux, sergeant-at-arms; Alvin Thibodeaux, historian; W. J. (Billy) Guidry, chaplain.

Other special guests were Arthur Guidry of Vinton, district vice commander and present commander of the Vinton post; Ed Daily, past district commander; Gaylord Cox, past district vice commander; and Jack C. Watson, commander of the Lake Charles post.

Kilties open 25th year

The Lake Charles high school Kilties will open their 25th season Monday with a meeting at 9 a. m. in the school auditorium.

Officers for the year are: Susan Chasey, Drum Colonel; Sue Cagle and Diane Quaid, Colonels; Judy DiGiglia, American Flag-bearer; Diane Cordone, Louisiana Flag-bearer; Charlotte Theriot, LCHS Kilties Flag-bearer.

The drum corps is composed of bass drums, Carolyn McCool, Nell Campbell, and Davey Turner; cymbals, Melinda Allison; tenor drums, Jane Cagle, Betty Hogue, June Jines, and Cindy Roy; snare drums, Jeanne Bilyeu, Claudette Brashear, Cathy Cagle, Susie Clonts, Sharon Dowty, Catherine Garvey, Kent Gerard, Kitty Hall, Linda Henshaw, Jennifer Landry, Marcia Morgan, Kempa Perrin, Kathy Scalisi, Anna Trimble and Kathy Wulff.

Cheerleaders for the high school are Charlotte Dumatriat, Laura Eagle, Pam Watson, Paul DeMary, Bubba Flournoy, and David Trahan.

The Kilties are under the direction of Miss Murphy and Miss Lucille Leaton.

Lorraine Benoit’s birthday

Lorraine Joyce Benoit, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Benoit, entertained a group of her friends at her home, 710 Sallier street, in celebration of her 11th birthday anniversary.

Games and dancing were enjoyed.
