Lead changes and close races as LHSFR heads into final round

The second go-round of the Louisiana High School Finals Rodeo at Burton Coliseum brought three lead changes heading into the short-go round today.

There are new leaders in Bareback riding, tiedown roping and team roping, and there are close races in barrel racing, goat tying, pole bending and steer wrestling.

The short-go round will start today at 5 p.m.

LEAD CHANGES

BAREBACK RIDING

Bryer Prince (Home school) trailed Jakob Simoneaux (Accelerated Christian Education) by one point and flipped that into a 6.2-point lead, 91.2-85, after a 61-point ride earned him second place in the second go-round.

TIEDOWN ROPING

John Murphy (Bell City) tied his calf in 9.6 seconds to win the second go-round in tiedown roping Friday, and it was just enough to slip ahead of Cougar Racca (Bell City) heading into the short-go by .80 points, 83-82.2.

TEAM ROPING

Grace Dubois (Devillier Ed. Institute) and Kayson Lasyone (Magnolia Bend Academy) started the LHSFR town 10 points to the team of Teddie Austin Guynn (Home school) and Wyatt Sonnier (Welsh) but now lead by 12.4 points.

Dubois and Lasyone placed in the top three in each of the first two rounds, including the winning time of 7.13 seconds in the second go-round Friday. They lead Guynn/Sonner 120.8-108.4.

CLOSE RACES

BARREL RACING

Rylee Jo Maryman (University View Academy) won the first (15.012) and second go-round (14.890) to cut Ava Nunez’s (Bell City) lead in barrels to seven points, 95-88.

GOAT TYING

Only 3.2 points separates the leaders in goat tying. Ella Kay (Barbe) leads Allie Calcote (East Beauregard)109.4-106.2 after back-to-back second-place finishes.

The pair started the LHSFR tied at 95 points each.

POLE BENDING

Kodi Miller’s (Simpson) lead in pole bending is town to 4.6 points after not earning any points in the second go-round Friday.

Kenzie King (Jeff Davis Home School) trails Miller 108-130.4 after placing fifth in the second go-round with a time of 20.386 points.

STEER WRESTLING

The steer wrestling state championship could come down today’s final round.

Kole Landry (Teurlings Catholic) placed second in the second go-round with a time of 5.55 seconds and leads the standings with 78 points, but Ryden Martin (Sulphur) gained some ground with the top time in the round of 5.22 seconds and has 70.5 points.

ALL-ROUND

Sulphur cowboy Zach Reeves holds a slim lead on Bell City’s John Murphy in the All-Around Cowboy standings, 120.6-116.6, while first-round leader Jakob Simoneaux has dropped to third (109).

Reeves has earned 13.8 points so far at the LHSFR after taking second and third in the first and second go-rounds of saddle bronco riding respectively.

Bell City’s Ava Nunez has a solid lead in the All-Around Cowgirl race. She leads Maryman by 39.1 points. Nunez placed in the top five in the first two rounds of barrel racing and pole bending.
