BREAKING: Power outages force school closures

Following Monday afternoon’s weather event, power outages are currently impacting Calcasieu and Vernon parishes schools in various parts of the parish.
“At this time, there is not an estimated restoration time for these campuses,” CPSB spokesperson Holly Holland said.
Due to this, all CPSB schools and facilities will be closed Tuesday.
An update will be provided tomorrow as to the status of schools on Wednesday, Holland said.
The regular school board meeting will still occur as scheduled Tuesday.
Jeff Davis Parish Supt. John Hall said he feels it is in the best interest of students and employees to cancel schools on Tuesday.
This will give staff time to get in to the schools to assess any damage and allow parish officials to assess roads and powerlines to be cleared and power to be restored in areas that are without.

“After discussions with officials concerning hazards ranging from trees down, low hanging power lines, gas leaks, flooding, and major roads still closed, I am leaning on the side of caution,” Hall said. “I do understand this may cause a hardship, but based on the information I have tonight, school will be canceled Tuesday.”
