Defending Class C girls track and field champion Reeves will try to add another state title today at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association track and field championships at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Today’s meet will include Classes 1A, B and C. The championships will continue on Friday with Class 3A and 2A and conclude on Saturday with Class 5A and 4A.

Reeves won six events last year and ran away with the team title, beating runner-up Gibsland-Coleman by 46 points.

The Raiders are seeded third or better in seven events, led by the top-seeded 4×400-meter relay team. Hope Cauthron is the defending 200-meter champion but will start in lane six this time as the fourth seed (28.83 seconds). The Raiders will also look to get big points out of Nyla Williams and Kelsey Williams, who are seeded second in the discus and 200, respectively.

Class C Boys

South Cameron’s Chad Lapoint will try to repeat his three individual medal haul from last season. The defending 100 and 110 hurdles champion is once again the top seed in both events and seeks to improve on his runner-up finish in the long jump where he is also the top seed.

Hackberry’s Ely Walker is chasing his second consecutive discus title and a state class record. He came within 4 feet of Kilbourne’s James Oliver’s 2004 mark of 153-6 last year, and his top throw this season was 152 feet at the McNeese Cowboy Relays on April 2.

Class B

Hathaway’s Kaitlyn Sawyer was the girls 800 and 1,600 runner-up in 2023. She leads the field in the 800 with a chance to unseat defending champion Sophia Swinney of Anacoco. She is also the top seed in the 1,600, three in the 3,200 and two in the 4×400 relay, giving her a chance at medaling in four events.

Class 1A

Hamilton Christian’s Kaleb Bigwoods made a slash last year as a freshman at the state meet, winning the boys 800 run. This year he will try to add a 400 title as the third seed. While his seed time is 50.18 seconds, he had a personal best of 47.63 at the Wampus Cat Relay on March 28, which would put him ahead of Southern’s Ronald Johnson and Denim Hunt, the defending champ. The Warriors have the top 4×400 relay team, an event they placed third in last season.
