The Barbe girls golf teams split a pair of sudden-death playoffs at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division I girls state golf tournament Wednesday afternoon at Les Vieux Chenes Golf Course in Youngsville.

Barbe sophomore Mattie Purgahn (77-74—151) overcame a three-stroke deficit to first-round leader Abigail McWilliams of Benton and won in a playoff over Walker’s Evelyn Artiera (76-75—151) to win individual medalist honors.

The Bucs’ quest for a fourth consecutive team title ended in a playoff with Benton.

Purgahn reached the green on hole No. 1 in two shots and two-putted for par in the individual playoff.

In the team playoff, McWilliams’ second shot landed 15 feet from the hole, allowing her to two-putt and beat Purgahn, who bogeyed the hole after ending up in a green-side bunker.

Benton (153-160—313) led the Bucs (165-148—313) by 12 strokes after the first round Tuesday, but Barbe’s Maggie Dressler improved by 15 strokes in the second round to tie for the low round of the day, an even-par 74, with Prugahn to force the tiebreaker for the team title.

Division II girls

Also at Les Vieux Chenes Wednesday, the Westlake girls golf team made history with its best team and individual finish in program history.

Westlake was the runner-up to champion Ascension Christian (357) with a 36-hole total of 371, and junior Eli Evans was the runner-up medalist to Episcopal’s Sophia Macias (144).

Evans shot rounds of 87 and 86 to finish at 173, edging Ascension Christian’s Peyton Flynn by one stroke.

Division II boys

The St. Louis Catholic boys golf team improved by 11 shots in the second round on Tuesday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to catch St. Thomas More.

The Cougars won their second state championship in three seasons with a 3-over par two-round total of 583 at Cane Row Golf in New Iberia. St. Louis was searching for its third state title in four seasons but finished third at 27-over par 607. Teurlings Catholic was runner-up at 600.

Kye Hanks led the Saints with rounds of 74 and 72 to finish fifth in the individual standings. He was the lone Saint to finish in the top 10.
