KINDER — Rosepine played the part of spoiler for the second consecutive season on Monday and upset No. 3 Kinder in the regional round of the nonselect Division III softball playoffs.

No. 14 Rosepine (18-10) won 6-5. They beat the Yellow Jackets (25-5) a year ago 4-3 in 10 innings.

“We practiced Sunday and got there at three,” Rosepine head coach David Weldon said. “You couldn’t get the girls off the field.

“It was getting dark and they said coach lets (practice) more. Not to take anything away from (Kinder). We knew what we were up against. We knew we were going to see two of the best pitchers in the state of Louisiana. The girls’ work ethic made me feel real comfortable that we had a chance. That is all you need in this sport.”

Rosepine jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. They scored three runs in the first inning on a passed ball and an error, and Kelly Norris and Marli Jones hit back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning.

Kinder had some missed opportunities in the second, fourth and sixth innings, but Rosepine made some big defensive plays. Left fielder Alayna Stolfi chased down a fly ball near the foul line and turned it into a double play when a Kinder runner failed to tag up.

Kinder loaded the bases in the fourth and sixth innings but managed one run on Sam Dupont’s sacrifice fly. Rosepine shortstop Ashlynn Hall was able to run up and catch a shallow pop fly with a runner on third base to end the fifth inning, and first baseman Jones scooped up a ground ball down the first base line to end the Yellow Jackets’ bases-loaded threat in the sixth.

Kinder scored four runs on singles by Samantha Hayes, Hillari Shuff and Dupont, but senior pitcher Sienna Stinley closed the door with her fifth strikeout of the game.

“She (Stinley) has unbelievable spin on her ball,” Weldon said. “When she has the confidence and she believes, she is one of the best pitchers in Louisiana. I firmly believe that.”

Rosepine will play the winner out of No. 6 Pine Prairie and No. 11 Many in the quarterfinals, looking to reach the state tournament for the first time since 2021.

“We have to keep pushing and fighting,” Weldon said. “We told them before the game that you have to fight like the third monkey trying to get on the Ark.

“That has to be our mindset going into every game because everyone is going to doubt us. We are a 14-seed. We are not supposed to upset the No. 3. We are supposed to be losing in the second round.”
