MOSS BLUFF — Sam Houston senior Hailey Mire was dominant in the circle and the Broncos pounded out nine hits to beat Iowa 11-0 Monday as thunderstorms rolled into the area.

Mire pitched a one-hitter while recording double-digit strikeouts (12) in her second consecutive start and just one walk. In her last four starts, Mire has struck out 29 batters in 21 innings with five walks and six earned runs.

The only hit that nonselect Division II No. 4 Iowa (21-8) managed was a two-out single by Parker Daigle in the top of the first inning. But she was left stranded after Mire recorded her third strikeout of the game.

Mire retired the side in the second inning on a fly out and two strikeouts, sandwiched three strikeouts around a walk in the third and struck out two to close out the fourth and fifth inning.

Sam Houston’s offense (18-10) quickly took control of the game in the bottom of the first inning with seven runs. Aubrey Hobbs hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and Kallie England, Braelyn McCain and Mazlin Authement hit back-to-back-to-back singles to push the lead to 7-0.

Sam Houston has won 11 of its last 12 games since starting the season 4-7 and will close out the regular season today when it hosts Acadiana in a nondistrict game. The Broncos dispatched the Rams 7-0 on Mar. 12.
