IOWA — Underclassmen led the Lake Charles College Prep boys and Barbe girls to team titles on Friday at the Taussig Relays at Iowa High School.

LCCP was paced by junior Careion Franklin and freshman Ayden Carter, while Barbe junior Kennedi Burks and sophomore Aniyah Lavan carried the Bucs to the title.

Barbe scored 146 points to easily outpace Huntington (86) and end St. Louis Catholic three year championship run. Barbe won the Taussig Relays girls team title for the first time since 2017.

LCCP beat runner up Sam Houston 114-96 after scoring 25 points in the final three events.

Lavan excelled on the track and in field events, winning the high jump (5-4) and long jump (18-1) while running a leg in the first place 4×200-meter relay team and the second place 4×400 team. Burks was also part of the 4×200 and 4×400 team and won the 400 open with a time 55.51 seconds running in to a strong headwind in the final 100 meters.

Franlin won the 400 in 50 seconds flat and second in the 200 (22.66) and helped pace the Trailblazers to wins in the 4×200 (3:39.28) an 4×400 (3:39.28). Carter ran the first lead in the 4×200 and was part of the runner-up 4×100 team as well as a gold medal in the 100 dash (11.28) and bronze in the 200 (22.68).

Iowa senior Brianna Underwood set a school and meet record in the discus with a career best throw of 123 feet, 7 inches. She also won the javelin (132-4).

Other double-gold winners included Barbe’s Michael Fulton (shot put, discus), Washington-Marion’s Markel Senegal (long jump, triple jump), St. Louis Catholic’s Deacon Stantz (1600, 3200) and Sam Houston’s Trenton Monceaux (110 hurdles and 300 hurdles).
