On Campus: SW La. students recognized for achievements

McNeese awards scholarships

The McNeese State University Black Faculty-Staff Council recently awarded three first-year students the Creating Opportunities  for Recruiting Excellence (CORE) scholarship.

Eric Beloney and Alicia Powell each received a $1,000 scholarship and DeKhoury Flagg received $500.

The scholarship provides financial support to McNeese students from Lake Charles high schools with low student representation  at the university including LaGrange High School, Washington-Marion High School and Lake Charles College Prep.

Beloney, from Lake Charles College Prep, is majoring in psychology and plans to go to medical school to become a psychiatrist.

Powell, from Washington-Marion High School, is a nursing major. She would like to become a labor and delivery  nurse to help save the lives of premature children and take care of their mothers.

Flagg, also from Washington-Marion High School, is a business management major. He wants to become a  business leader and a real estate agent.

Southern Miss honors locals

HATTIESBURG — The University of Southern Mississippi has released its president’s and dean’s lists for the 2023 fall semester.

The president’s list includes full-time students who earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. Darbi Nicole George of Lake Charles has been named to the president’s list.

Dean’s list scholars are those with at least a 3.5 grade-point average, but less than a 4.0. Mikaylah Jenae Manley of Lake Charles has been named to the dean’s list.

La. Tech honors local students

RUSTON — Louisiana Tech University has announced the names of students on its fall quarter 2023 dean’s honor list.

To be eligible for the dean’s honor lists, a student is required to earn at least a 3.5 academic grade point average with no grade lower than a C on a minimum of nine semester hours completed (100-level or higher).
